  2. What do you think of when you think of light and darkness? Light is good, darkness sinister. Light is warm, darkness cold. Light reveals what is going on; darkness hides what is going on.

  3. What do we mean when we say that God is light?

    1. God is light, in Him is no darkness. Holy, pure, blameless, perfect. 1 John 1:5-10.

    2. Yahweh-Or exposes the darkness (evil). John 3:19.

How do we see God’s light in the story of Nathan and David (2 Samuel 12:1-14)? God’s holiness and his exposing evil are seen here. David thought his sin was done in secret, but God saw (El Roi) David’s sin and exposed it (Yahweh-Or). While God disciplined David for his sin, he exposed David’s sin out of compassion, and to provoke David to repentance and restoration.

    3. Yahweh-Or guides me and provides direction for me. Psalm 18:28, 119:105; Proverbs 6:23.

    4. Yahweh-Or is glorious and majestic and beautiful. Revelation 21:23-27.

  4. Concordance search for light, fit into each of the above categories. What does each passage reveal about God?

  5. How does this relate to the cross?

    • We see God’s holiness and purity, and our sin is exposed in his sight.

    • What is the result of our sin being exposed?

God’s light exposes our sin, but it also convicts us of our sin, and reveals his love and mercy for us. This is the first and greatest way in which his light leads and guides us.
